Miraikan - The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation Space, Earth, Robots – Explore the cutting-edge technologies of Japan in one day
Experience the Earth and the future through hands-on contents and explanations by Science Communicators
Miraikan - The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation offers numerous hands-on exhibits that enable visitors to learn about the latest scientific technologies in a fun way. When you enter the museum, the first thing that comes into view is the Geo-Cosmos, a giant Earth-shaped display showing the movement of clouds captured by weather satellites, as well as dynamic video contents narrating the history and present of the Earth.
The 5th floor, curated under the theme “Explore the frontiers,” has exhibits including “This is ISS, go ahead,” which introduces astronauts’ daily lives and research, and “Mission Survival: 10 Billion” where you can learn about the mechanisms behind natural disasters through models as well as measures against disasters studied from past cases. The 3rd floor exhibition themed “Create your future” is a space to discover cutting-edge technologies and ideas for a better future through exhibits, such as advanced robots especially popular among visitors from overseas, and experiencing an effective way of thinking to achieve the ideal future in a game format.
One the of most unique features of the museum is the large number of Science Communicators, who explain the exhibits in an easy-to-understand manner and engage in dialogues with visitors on scientific technologies and the future society. In addition, the exhibitions are generally both in Japanese and English, and the Geo-Cosmos shows English programs at certain times of the day, and there are multilingual floor guides (English, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)) to cater to school groups and families visiting from overseas. The interactive Geo-Scope, a panel in which you can freely access data about the Earth, is offered in several languages including European languages. There are also various accommodations so that wheelchair users and those with visual or hearing impairments can enjoy the exhibits.
